After 14 years, nearly $13 billion spent by taxpayers and 4,622 GL of environmental water available, the Murray Darling Basin Plan continues to fall short of its original assumptions—ideas that were legislated before any scientific evidence supported their feasibility. We are tired of being told that modelling proves everything.
In reality, modelling is not an exact science; it simply offers a way to explore new ideas and strategies.
The Albanese Government, with various Water Ministers, has focused on a “just add more water” approach, believing it will improve environmental conditions.
Yet recent reports show this strategy is backfiring: carp populations are at record levels, native fish and waterbird numbers are declining, and environmental flows are causing ongoing harm to our major rivers.
The Basin Plan Review will continue through 2026, and communities in the Southern MDB want their voices heard loud and clear. Join us on March 31st at Barham Services Club for a Water Forum.
